The History of House Numbers in Denmark

In 1771, the reformer Johann Friedrich Struensee introduced the requirement for house numbers on all houses in larger Danish cities. Despite Struensee's execution in 1772, house numbers were not reintroduced until 1859 and have been an integral part of Danish building identification ever since.

    Regulatory requirements

Yes, according to the Address Act, Chapter 3, Section 9, it is mandatory to have a house number on one's house. House numbers must be visible from the road and placed on the side of the building facing the road or path.

House numbers must be sufficiently large and legible, with a high-contrast font relative to the background. House numbers must be placed at the entrance to the property or on the building, and it must be clearly indicated which entrance the number refers to.

Please note that local guidelines and interpretations may vary, so always contact the relevant municipality for precise information on the requirements in your area.

    Instructions for mounting house numbers

Step 1: Planning and Measurement – Choose the desired location and mark it precisely with a pencil, following the placement rules. Step 2: Positioning the House Number – Centre and adjust the placement, then lightly mark the screw holes.

Step 3: Pre-drilling Holes – Pre-drill holes to prevent splintering when using a drill. Step 4: Attaching the House Number – Screw the house number in place without overtightening, especially since it is made of acrylic.

Step 5: Check and Finalise – Check that the house number is securely attached and level. Erase any pencil marks for a clean finish.
